Figure 1. Enterococcus faecalis pheromone-responsive conjugative system. Pheromone A released from the potential recipient cell (right) interacts with plasmid A in the potential donor cell (left) to induce synthesis of aggregation substance. Attachment of aggregation substance to binding substance causes the cells to clump into visible aggregates. Once the pheromone-responsive plasmid A has transferred from donor to recipient cell, synthesis of pheromone A is shut off.
