Fungal Diseases Spotlight
Worldwide, more than one billion people get a fungal infection each year.
Although there are anywhere from 1 to 5 million species of fungi, only a few hundred possess pathogenic traits. The most common fungal infections are ringworm and vaginal yeast infections.
Fungal infections range from mild to life-threatening, putting people with weakened immune systems at risk for the most fungal infections. Fungal disease outbreaks are rare, and some have occurred following extreme weather events. There are only a few types of antifungal medicines. Increasingly, fungi are becoming resistant to one or more medicines.
