HIV/AIDS Spotlight
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system. Despite advances in treatment, there is no cure for HIV, and it remains a persistent global public health problem. HIV disease is the term that encompasses all stages of the virus from infection to the onset of opportunistic diseases. AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) is still a term commonly used to refer to the immune deficiency caused by HIV and is also the same as HIV Stage 3.
There is no cure for HIV, but HIV treatment can reduce the amount of HIV in your body. In the United States, estimated HIV infections decreased by 12% from 2018 to 2022.
