Hantavirus Spotlight
Hantaviruses are a family of viruses that can cause serious illnesses like hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). These viruses are mainly spread through contact with rodents and their urine and feces. Person-to-person spread is possible, but not common. In the United States, surveillance of hantavirus disease began in 1993 during an outbreak in the Four Corners region of the United States. From 1993-2023, only 890 cases of hantavirus disease were reported in the United States.
Emerging Infectious Diseases has published research on hantaviruses, including the Andes virus, the only strain known to transmit between humans through close contact. Andes virus causes HPS and has high fatality rates. In 2026, a deadly outbreak of Andes virus was reported among passengers and crew of a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean.
