Quick Guide to Article Information

Include an EID Author Checklist, Abstract, Cover Letter, Running Head, One-Sentence Summary, Keywords, First Author’s biography and Corresponding Author’s contact information (email and mailing address) with all article types unless otherwise noted. For every article include an ORCiD number for first and corresponding authors. Figures should be 300 DPI at 5”w or more. Set tables using the MS Word Table tool.

These manuscripts may address factors known to influence the emergence of diseases, such as microbial adaptation and change, human demographics and behavior, technology and industry, economic development and land use, international travel and commerce, and the strength of public health measures. Authors should use freeform subheadings in the main body of the text to improve readability. Requirements: freeform subheadings in the body of the text. 150 50
Synopsis 3500 150 50 As needed; photographs and illustrations are encouraged Synopses comprise case series papers and concise reviews of infectious diseases or closely related topics, with preference given to reviews of new and emerging diseases. Typically includes case series, outbreak reports, studies of the geographic spread of emerging infectious diseases, systematic reviews, meta-analyses. Research 3500 150 50 As needed Research articles report laboratory and epidemiologic results within a public health perspective. These articles explain the value of the research in public health terms and place the findings in a larger perspective (i.e., "Here is what we found, and here is what the findings mean"). Requirements: corresponding author contact information, first author biographical sketch, and subheadings in body of text (e.g., "Materials and Methods," "Results," and "Discussion"). Another Dimension 3500 NA (unstructured 50-word abstracts for essays only) 50 As needed Another Dimension articles include essays, short stories, or poems on philosophical issues related to science, medical practice, and human health. Topics may include science and the human condition, the unanticipated side of epidemic investigations, or how people perceive and cope with infection and illness. Manuscripts are selected as much for the experiences they describe as for their literary merit. This section is intended to evoke compassion for human suffering and to expand the science reader’s literary scope. Online Reports are consensus group meetings, workshops, and other activities in which suggestions for diagnostic, treatment, or reporting methods related to infectious disease topics are formulated. The essay describes the person's life and his or her significance to public health, science, and infectious disease. Requirements: Provide an image of the subject, brief clue to the person's identity, and 5 possible answers. Dispatch 1200 50 15 Maximum of 4 figures and tables total, e.g. 2 figures and 2 tables; 1 figure and 3 tables; 4 figures and no tables. Include subheadings in body of text. Dispatches are updates on infectious disease trends and research that include descriptions of new methods for detecting, characterizing, or subtyping new or reemerging pathogens. Developments in antimicrobial drugs, vaccines, or infectious disease prevention or elimination programs are appropriate. Case reports are also welcome. 50 15
Commentary (by invitation only) 1000 NA 15 No abstract, figures, or tables. Commentaries are thoughtful discussions of current topics. Only invited commentaries will be considered for publication. 15

Book or Other Media Review (by invitation only) 500 NA 0 1 image of book or other media cover. Include title, author, publisher, number of pages, length and format of media, and key details. Books or other media reviews focus on issues and topics relevant to emerging infectious diseases. Only invited book and media reviews will be considered for publication. 0
Comment Letter 300 NA 5 No summary line or First Author biography is required. No tables or figures. Comment Letters typically include comments about or criticism of a previously published article in EID. They are more likely to be published if submitted within 4 weeks of the original article's (i.e., commented-upon) publication. Comment letters go through peer review, and, in cases where they criticize another author's work, at the discretion of the Editor in Chief, they are sent to the author of the original article for response. Those responses (Reply to Comment Letter) may be published concurrent to the Comment Letter. 5
Etymologia 100 NA 5 Maximum of 1 high resolution image from a primary source (i.e., not Wikipedia or Wikimedia). No summary line or First Author biography is required. Etymologia articles are thoroughly researched derivations of emerging disease terms that include a brief scientific or historical context. Historical Review 3500 150 50 As needed Historical Reviews include public health historical reports based on research and analysis of emerging disease issues. Reply to Comment Letter 300 N/A 5 0 The Editor in Chief will decide to invite the original author to reply to comments or criticism of the Comment Letter accepted for publication, regarding the author’s original article published in EID. Emerging Infections Network (EIN) Letters 800 50 10 Maximum of 2 figures or tables, total, e.g. 1 figure and 1 table; 2 figures and no tables; 2 tables and no figure Focus on emerging infections-related clinical or public health issues and typically revolve around diagnosis, treatment, quality, safety, or healthcare policy. Submitting/corresponding authors should be members of the Emerging Infections Network. 50 10
