Electrophoretic analysis of bepA-specific PCR amplicons in study of persistent Bartonella quintana infection in macaques at primate research institute, Japan. Lane M, 0.1–2 kb DNA size marker; lane 1, nuclease-free water (negative control); lane 2, Bartonella quintana strain FullerT (positive control); lane 3, strain MF1-1; lane 4, strain TB1-1; lane 5, strain MN51-1; lane 6, strain MN57-1. The expected amplicon size for the bepA locus is 1,612 bp, as observed in the positive control (lane 2). As with strain MF1-1 (lane 3), amplicon size of strains TB1-1, MN51-1, and MN57-1 (lanes 4–6) was ≈200 bp, indicating the absence of the bepA locus in the chromosome.
