Inset shows detail of the mud pit area. Colored dots indicate environmental sampling sites and Burkholderia pseudomallei STs detected from samples. Among participants, 7 children who crawled through the mud pit had clinical manifestations of melioidosis. Burkholderia pseudomallei isolated in soil samples from the mud pit were later genomically linked to isolates from cutaneous lesions on 7 children. ST, sequence type.
