- New Malaria in South Africa April 06, 2018 The United Kingdom (UK) has reported cases of malaria in UK residents who had returned from the Waterberg district municipality of Limpopo Province in South Africa. - Updated Listeriosis in South Africa March 16, 2018 There is an outbreak of listeriosis in South Africa. People usually become ill with listeriosis after eating contaminated foods. Travelers to South Africa, especially those with higher risk of infection, may wish to avoid certain foods to reduce their risk of infection. Read More >>
- Updated Yellow Fever in Brazil March 15, 2018 There is a large, ongoing outbreak of yellow fever in multiple states of Brazil. Travelers to Brazil should protect themselves from yellow fever by getting yellow fever vaccine at least 10 days before travel, and preventing mosquito bites. Read More >>
- Malaria in Brazil January 31, 2018 Public health officials in Brazil have reported an outbreak of locally transmitted malaria in the town of Wenceslau Guimarães in Bahia State. Local transmission means that mosquitoes in the area may be infected with malaria and spreading it to people. Read More >>
- Hurricanes Irma and Maria in the Caribbean January 03, 2018 Beginning on September 6, 2017, Hurricane Irma crossed the Caribbean, followed on September 16 by Hurricane Maria. These storms caused severe damage in a number of countries and territories, including Anguilla, Barbuda, the British Virgin Islands, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Puerto Rico, Saint Martin, Sint Maarten, and the US Virgin Islands. - Polio in Nigeria July 21, 2017 The Nigerian Ministry of Health has reported several cases of poliovirus in the state of Borno in northeastern Nigeria. CDC recommends that all travelers to Nigeria be fully vaccinated against polio. Because of the risk of cross-border transmission, CDC recommends a one-time booster dose of polio vaccine for fully vaccinated adults traveling to Niger, Cameroon, or Chad to work in healthcare facilities, refugee camps, or other humanitarian aid settings. - Polio in Democratic Republic of the Congo July 19, 2017 Cases of vaccine-derived polio have been reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, according to the World Health Organization. Read More >>

- MERS in the Arabian Peninsula June 28, 2017 The following countries in or near the Arabian Peninsula have confirmed MERS: Bahrain, Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudia Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. - New Lassa Fever in Nigeria March 05, 2018 Lassa fever is a viral illness that usually causes mild symptoms, including slight fever, weakness, and headache. However, in some people it can cause more serious symptoms, like bleeding gums, eyes, or nose; difficulty breathing; repeated vomiting; facial swelling; pain in the chest, back, and abdomen; shock; and even death. - Plague in Madagascar December 19, 2017 In early October, World Health Organization and the Madagascar Ministry of Health responded to an unusual outbreak of plague pneumonia in widespread areas of Madagascar, including in heavily populated cities of Antananarivo (the capital city and its suburbs) and Toamasina. The outbreak has been contained. In late November 2017, the Madagascar Ministry of Health declared the urban outbreak of plague pneumonia had been contained. However, bubonic plague occurs nearly every year in Madagascar, so travelers to the area should continue to take precautions to protect their health. Read More >>
- Mumps in New Zealand November 16, 2017 Public health officials in New Zealand have reported an outbreak of mumps. CDC recommends that travelers to New Zealand protect themselves by making sure they are vaccinated against mumps. Read More >>
- Cholera in Yemen August 14, 2017 There is a widespread cholera outbreak in Yemen. Between April and July 2017, more than 400,000 cholera cases and nearly 2,000 deaths have been reported. Twenty-one of the country’s 23 governorates have reported suspected cases. Read More >>
- Dengue in Sri Lanka August 09, 2017 The Ministry of Health in Sri Lanka has reported a dengue epidemic. More than 100,000 cases have been reported across the country. Read More >>
- Avian Flu (H7N9) in China March 07, 2017 Chinese health authorities have confirmed human cases of avian influenza A (H7N9) since September 2016. CDC advises people traveling to China to avoid contact with poultry (including poultry markets and farms), birds, and their droppings and to avoid eating undercooked poultry. Infected birds that appear healthy may still be able to transmit this virus to humans. Read More >>
Travel Notice Definitions
CDC issues different types of notices for international travelers. As of April 5, 2013, these definitions have been refined to make the announcements more easily understood by travelers, health-care providers, and the general public. The definitions are laid out below. They describe both levels of risk for the traveler and recommended preventive measures to take at each level of risk.

Level 3: Warning | Avoid all non-essential travel to this destination | High risk to travelers |
